KFU entered the top 100 of QS subject rating “Petroleum Engineering”
The results of an expanded set of subject ratings for QS World University Rankings by Subject 2020 have been published. Kazan Federal University is among the top 100 universities in the world in the Subject “Petroleum Engineering”.
The disciplines “Petroleum Engineering”, “Geology” and “Geophysics” in QS subject ratings were included for the first time. Evaluation of universities was carried out according to four criteria: “Academic reputation”, “Reputation among employers”, “Citation” and “Hirsch Index”.
The subject rating “Petroleum Engineering” is presented by 76 universities of the world, among which 5 Russian universities: TPU – 26th place, Moscow State University – 42nd, and St. Petersburg State University, NSU and KFU – are in the range 51-75. Kazan Federal University scored 60.8 points. KFU showed the best results in the indicators “Reputation among employers” (64.9 – 41 place in the rating) and “Academic reputation” (58.2 – 39 place in the rating).
“I believe that QS made the right decision by including the rating “Petroleum Engineering”, because in this area there are a lot of good universities, many students and applicants. A huge number of students study in oil and gas specialties in Latin America, in the Arab countries, China, Africa, Russia and North America. Representatives of these countries will apply to the rating to select the best universities for training,” Danis Nourgaliev, Vice-Rector for Research, Director of the Institute of Geology and Petroleum Technologies of KFU, expressed his opinion.
Also, Danis Nourgaliev said that mainly universities are represented in the ranking, producing much more oil and gas specialists than KFU.
“We do not have a lot of graduates, but we carry out broad international cooperation – we conduct research in cooperation with universities and companies around the world. And this influenced our results,” the vice-rector said.
He also noted that Kazan Federal University had high hopes for a new master’s program of double diplomas “Petroleum Engineering” (oil and gas engineering). It is being implemented by the Institute of Geology and Petroleum Technologies in conjunction with the Imperial College of London with funding from British Petroleum and Rosneft.
“It is very pleasant that we were in the hundred of the best universities in the world, and now the most important thing is to stay in it. We will work even more. We need to publish more good articles to become more recognizable all over the world. In the ratings, academic recognition and recognition by the employer is very important,” Danis Nourgaliev concluded.
