Institute representatives join 1st Congress of the Association of Geologists, Geophysicists and Engineers

The event was part of the Russian Energy Industry Conference in Moscow on 15 October. The Institute was represented by Danis Nurgaliev, Vice-Rector for Earth Sciences, Ildus Chukmarov, Deputy Director of IGPT for Marketing and Director of CdoGEO (Center for Advanced Training), and Vladislav Sudakov, Deputy Director of Gazpromneft-KFU Center for Marketing. Danis Nurgaliev told about the cooperation between the Association and Kazan Federal University, opportunities and realized projects. He familiarized the participants with the main priorities of KFU and IGPT. The Vice-Rector paid special attention to the Institute’s cooperation with companies – Rosneft, Gazprom Neft, Tatneft, and others. “The Association should become a platform where universities, students, companies, employers can interact, get useful information, share experience, organize conferences, and grow,” notes Dr Nurgaliev. “An information hub should be created as part of AGGI, where students will be able to familiarize themselves with industry trends, learn about conferences, companies, vacancies, get access to publications. AGGI should facilitate the implementation of educational initiatives – organizing courses of famous scientists, conducting student internships, contributing to the development of university teachers. In addition, I propose to study the experience of the world associations of geologists in order to introduce the best practices and make the interaction more fruitful.” Much work will be done in additional professional education. “During the conference we talked to representatives of companies – customers of CdoGEO – Gazprom Neft, LUKOIL, Irkutsk Oil Company, Tatneft,” says Ildus Chukmarov. “With Vladimir Vorobyov and coordinator Anastasia Turovtseva we discussed expanding cooperation in several areas. First, creating and conducting webinars with the participation of teachers and experts. Recording of lectures in the Incubator of Distance Education Projects and publication on the Rutube-channel of CdoGEO. Secondly, implementation of CdoGEO courses at AGGI events. Thirdly, opening a student chapter of AGGI at KFU. Fourth, preparation of field workshops on our Geologist steamship for AGGI members. We have experience in all areas, so we are ready to implement it in the interests of AGGI.” On October 15, a foresight session dedicated to the current progress and plans of the Association on new scientific topics, conferences and seminars, training courses, programs, lectures, webinars, and presentation of a new industry scientific journal were held as part of the conference.

Institute hosts welcome ceremony for freshmen

On 2 September, the Institute leadership spoke with new students via video link – face-to-face teaching has been postponed until 1 November due to preparations for the 2024 BRICS Summit. Vice-Rector Danis Nurgaliev took the floor to address the young people. “Dear friends, I congratulate you, as you have become students of Kazan Federal University – one of the best and oldest universities in the country – this year it will be 220 years old,” said he. “You have chosen an excellent profession, with which many of you will connect your life path. Certainly, science is rapidly developing, new technologies appear, therefore it is necessary to study all your life. The first two months you will study remotely, but in November we will meet you, you will see your teachers, visit laboratories and get acquainted with young scientists. I wish you all interesting discoveries and success in your studies!” Institute Director Vladimir Silantyev gave the freshmen two important pieces of advice, “First, don’t be afraid to make mistakes. They help to overcome difficulties and move forward. At the university we treat students’ mistakes with understanding and try to help everyone. Secondly, I recommend to communicate more with teachers, supervisors and senior students, because real success comes through communication skills.” Chair of the Department of Petroleum Engineering Mikhail Varfolomeev advised to use all the opportunities that the university provides, “Today you have officially become students of Kazan Federal University. Four very interesting years are ahead of you. For example, in the oil and gas studies, we try to involve students in research and project activities. Thanks to this, young people gain tremendous experience and knowledge, becoming more prepared for their first career steps. I wish you to use all the opportunities that the university provides: participate in scientific conferences, prepare concerts, sports competitions, live a rich student life!” Director of the Center for Advanced Training Ildus Chukmarov noted that there are many opportunities for supplementary education for students. “Friends, 40 years ago I, like you, entered the Geological Faculty. Professions of a geologist, geophysicist, or oiler are in demand and highly paid. And our students have a special advantage over students of other universities, as here you can get a related additional profession. CdoGEO trains 1,500 students a year in various fields: geology, oil and gas business, geophysics, geodesy, surveying, metrology, economics. Don’t worry if you didn’t manage to enter a certain major. At CdoGEO you can get a diploma of oil or geologist, metrologist, surveyor, or geodesist. Moreover, we offer an interpreter course in geology and oil and gas. Knowledge of English helps students to enter English-speaking master’s programs and to pass interviews in Russian and international companies. Also, CdoGEO has a training program for a rig operator, Oil and Gas Production Operator 3rd Grade, with the help of which you can earn money during your internship.” After the opening remarks, Andrei Teryokhin, Deputy Director for Academic Affairs, and Natalya Khorkova, Deputy Director for Student Affairs, answered the most popular questions.

Institute shows new developments and holds meetings at TatOilExpo 2024

Among the many events was the agreement signing with Yugra State University. The Forum is an effective platform for exchange of ideas, discussion of key industry issues by Russian and foreign specialists and the scientific community of the oil and gas industry, demonstration of the latest developments and technologies, and a meeting place for the scientific, industrial and business communities. Kazan Federal University traditionally takes part in the forum. For the fourth year in a row it organizes a stand at TatOilExpo under the auspices of the Center for Liquid Hydrocarbons. This year, as part of the forum, KFU organized a roundtable Solving the problems of the oil and gas industry within the framework of a world-class scientific center. “In the report we presented technologies relevant for the oil and gas production industry, which are aimed at reducing the costs of prospecting and exploration of new fields, reducing the environmental burden and economic costs of their development, increasing oil production, as well as the digital transformation of the industry. These technologies have been developed by the Center's scientists,” emphasized Danis Nurgaliev, Vice-Rector for Earth Sciences. One part of KFU's stand was dedicated to water projects. “Water is a unique substance. It is the basis of all living things, a valuable resource, and also a research tool,” said Junior Research Associate Ilyas Bashirov. "We consider water from the point of view of human health, a source of valuable mineral resources, scientific works, achievements, and future plans to use water in various branches of life." “The zone of specialized chemistry for oil and gas industry presents unique samples of surfactants, polymers, gels and binary systems, and other specialized reagents developed by specialists of Kazan Federal University on the basis of domestic raw materials for a wide range of reservoir conditions of Russian fields. These innovative products are relevant in the context of modern chemical methods of enhanced oil recovery, as they allow to significantly increase the efficiency of oil production and reduce operating costs. The use of domestic raw materials ensures high quality of products and their availability for oil producing companies. Also, KFU plans to create and develop a center for engineering development on low-tonnage chemistry and increasing technological maturity of new products of Kazan Federal University on the basis of its own projected production site," said Chair of the Department of Petroleum Engineering Mikhail Varfolomeev. Another zone was devoted to carbonate deposits, which are a strategically important development site in the Republic of Tatarstan, accounting for 52% of all oil deposits in the region, and their potential has not yet been exhausted. Kazan Federal University has a number of unique technologies and techniques for studying carbonate reservoirs, including innovative enhanced oil recovery methods. The university's fundamental knowledge of basin modeling and reconstruction of sedimentation conditions, as well as our close cooperation with oil companies in the region, allow us to successfully develop carbonate reservoirs. “The unique geological conditions of Tatarstan create favorable prerequisites for successful development of carbonate reservoirs, which will contribute to strengthening the region's position as a leading center of the oil industry in Russia and beyond," noted Deputy Director of IGPT for Innovation Vladislav Sudakov. The Center for Advanced Training (CdoGEO) also joined the exhibition. Director of CdoGEO Ildus Chukmarov noted, “During the event we met with our long-standing partners and alumni, including representatives of Tatneft, TNG-Group, Belorusneft. It was a pleasure to communicate with Nikolai Kuzmichyov, Director of Neft 21 Vek LLC, with whom we realized courses for managers and specialists of CUPET (Cuba). With representatives of the China University of Petroleum we discussed the expansion of cooperation in education. We also had a meeting with representatives of the Venezuelan oil and gas company PDVSA, during which we discussed the content of the memorandum and the implementation of advanced education courses for PDVSA employees. In addition, during the forum the awarding of laureates for scientific achievements in various nominations took place. Alexei Vakhin, Head of the In-Situ Combustion Lab, was awarded with the 2nd degree diploma for the development of a new thermobarochemical technology for the development of hard-to-recover fields. And the 2nd degree diploma was awarded to Alexander Bolotov, Associate Professor of the Department of Petroleum Engineering, for the development of a kinetic inhibitor of hydrate formation."

Center for Advanced Training sets record in weekly enrolment

On 19 August, CdoGEO started training on professional development programs and a full-time session on a professional retraining program: Industrial safety requirements in the field of mine surveying Studies of carbonate reservoirs: sedimentology and secondary alteration Sedimentology of carbonate reservoir Basic types of core analysis Estimation and recalculation of oil and gas reserves Geology and Geochemistry of Oil and Gas. Among the students are employees of Rosneft, Aloil, Tatneft, Arctic Research Center, Surgutneftegaz, IGRGI, DUIM, Erendai Group Ural, LUKOIL-MCPB, Talakanneft, and Sheshmaoil. On August 20 at 5.00 a.m. the program Metrological Support of Hydrocarbon Feedstock Quantity Measurements at Oil and Gas Production and Refining Enterprises was opened. It is provided specifically to Irkutsk Oil Company. “This week CdoGEO has 159 trainees undergoing training in seven programs. Classes are held in different formats: in-person, distance learning technologies, full-time and part-time, including via video-conferencing and digital educational resources (DER)," says Director of CdoGEO Ildus Chukmarov. "Our Center has experience in conducting courses in different time zones and the difference of 5 or even 14 hours does not prevent us from working in the face-to-face format. CdoGEO works 24/7/365 thanks to the use of digital technologies. At the moment the Center has implemented its information software solution, CdoGEO Course Builder. With the support of the Department of Informatization and Communication we have developed an information system for managing requests for training and interaction of individual customers with various electronic document management systems of the automated management of KFU." The implementation of digitization helped the Center to fully automate its work with individual clients. At the moment we are working on creating of a digital system for interaction with corporate clients. In addition, we are working on improving the process of creating and using digital educational resources. CdoGEO's experience in implementing digital technologies in the provision of continuing education programs can be successfully scaled to the entire university."

Practical course in integrated modeling held by international expert

From July 22 to 26, 2024, CdoGEO conducted an advanced training program, Practical Course on Integrated Modeling. The course participants were employees of Sakhalin Energy LLC. Distance learning on the program was conducted by an international North Sea expert, a senior process engineer of an overseas company. "We looked at the different parts of the oil and gas production system from the reservoir to the separator and how these different parts affect oil and gas production. We looked at well models and reservoir models, specifically the matbalance method, ending with the design of the overall network and understanding how that affects hydrocarbon production. That is, how the different components of the overall network affect production and how this can be modeled in the program," the instructor emphasized. The trainees were satisfied with the organization of the training and the content of the program. "The training was at the highest level, there was always feedback from the instructor and live communication. For 5 days we had time to cover the most necessary sections of integrated modeling and practice in a specialized program," said one of the trainees. "I express my great gratitude to our international expert," noted Ildus Chukmarov, Deputy Director of Marketing, Director of the Center for Additional Education, Quality Management and Marketing (CdoGEO). "We always try to attract the best teachers and experts to implement our courses. It is not for nothing that our motto is We unite everyone's capabilities for each one's success! And this applies not only to people, but also to companies. The Institute of Geology and Petroleum Technologies fruitfully cooperates with RFD, which provides academic licenses for student training. On July 8, CdoGEO started a 5-day training for a group of specialists and managers of Rosneft's subdivisions in the advanced training program Drilling and Completion of Horizontal Wells. Instruction is conducted by Georgii Mozgovoi. The program is attended by employees of JSC Orenburgneft, JSC Sibneftegaz, JSC Tyumenneftegaz, Taas-Yuryakh Neftegazodobycha, JSC RN-Nyaganneftegaz, TomskNIPIneft, Verkhnechonskneftegaz, and Harampurneftegaz.
