KFU entered the top 100 of the “Engineering – Petroleum” QS subject rating
Results for the expanded set of QS World University Rankings by Subject 2020 have been recently published. Kazan Federal University entered the top hundred of the best universities in the world in the “Engineering – Petroleum” QS subject rating.
The disciplines “Engineering – Petroleum”, “Geology” and “Geophysics” were included in the QS subject ratings for the first time. The universities were assessed according to the following four criteria: Academic Reputation, Employer Reputation, Citations and Hirsch Index.
The “Engineering – Petroleum” subject rating is presented by 76 universities of the world, including 5 Russian universities: TPU – 26th place, Moscow State University – 42nd place. St. Petersburg State University, NSU and KFU are in the range 51-75. Kazan Federal University scored 60.8 points. KFU showed the best results in the following indicators: “Employer Reputation” (64.9 – 41st place in the rating) and “Academic Reputation” (58.2 – 39th place in the rating).
“I believe that QS made the right decision by including the “Engineering – Petroleum” rating because there are a lot of good universities in this area, many students and applicants. A huge number of students study in Petroleum Engineering in Latin America, Middle East, China, Africa, Russia and North America. Representatives of these countries will refer to the rating in order to choose the best universities for training,” said Danis Nurgaliev, Vice-Rector for Research, Director of the Institute of Geology and Petroleum Technologies of the Kazan Federal University.
Danis Karlovich also said that in the main, the rating includes universities that have much more graduates majoring Petroleum Engineering than KFU.
“We do not have very many graduates, but we carry out broad international cooperation – we conduct scientific research in cooperation with universities and companies around the world. And this influenced our results,” said the Vice-Rector.
He also noted that Kazan Federal University has high hopes for the new double-degree master’s program Petroleum Engineering. It is being implemented by the Institute of Geology and Petroleum Technologies and Imperial College London with funding from British Petroleum and Rosneft.
“It is very pleasant that we have entered the top 100 universities in the world, and now the most important thing is to hold this position. We will work even harder. We need to publish more good articles to become more recognizable around the world. Academic recognition as well as recognition by the employers are very important in the ratings,”Danis Nurgaliev concluded.
